BALTIMORE RECREATION

 

Although Baltimore is not specifically known for its recreational amenities, there are plenty of things to do during your visit. As might be expected, most of the recreational activities involve fishing and boating and the Harbor. However, there are also several land activities, such as golf courses, theaters and horse racing that can enrich your visit to Charm City.

Pool Prices: $1 per day, $15 season pass
Reedbird park has both basketball and tennis courts to go along with its medium-sized pool. Fishing is permitted as the park runs along the Patapsco River. Reedbird is a nice place to relax and enjoy some fishing or a clear view of the grasslands that lie southwest of the park.

Robert E. Lee Park is the kind of place where you can enjoy some solitude; perhaps use the open grass to toss the Frisbee around with friends or your dog, or, as the park does see a number of people on a daily basis, use the Frisbee or dog to meet that significant other. With 456.43 acres to enjoy, this place is great for hiking, jogging or walking, but beware of scattered dog droppings! The park strays of into separate almost secluded hiking trails, some of which circle the lake and offer some fishing. Other paths take you into the woods and can keep you walking for several miles. The park is known as a picturesque place to relax or get some exercise.

The Canton Waterfront Park serves as a boat launching spot as well as one of the primary fishing spots along the Harbor. Aside from some intense fishing the park is a nice place for a lazy stroll or family picnic. The Park is home to The Maryland Korean War Memorial, which is a touching sight in itself. This is one of the more popular hangouts for locals as well as visitors who want to enjoy the outdoors.

The historic Fell’s Point tall ship is available for moonlight buffet sails, murder mystery cruises and wedding ceremonies. Visitors can sail the Patapsco River and the Inner Harbor aboard the Windjammer Nighthawk, which travels to Fort McHenry, Federal hill, Harborplace and Key Bridge. Nighthawk is the charter agent for all vessels on the Eats Coast. Ticket reservations are strongly recommended.

This custom yacht charter/broker company does not offer public cruises, but it does offer everything from private yachts to large party boats. Some cruises offer live entertainment and can cater to almost any special event. Boats launch from the Inner Harbor and sail through Annapolis, St. Michaels and Rock Hall.

Harbor Cruises boats are docked along the Inner Harbor and set sail daily for lunch and dinner cruises. The Bay Lady and Lady Baltimore are the Harbor Cruises flagships. The ships hold 500 and 400 passengers. Lunch Cruises ($25) set sail from noon to 2pm, Mon-Sat, and noon to 3pm Sun. Dinner Cruises ($40--$50) launch at 7pm and return at 10pm. The cruises hold crab feasts Friday evenings from 7pm to 10pm and on Sundays from noon to 3pm. These are just some of the features of this popular public and private charter group. No refunds. Call ahead for reservations.

Clipper City is the largest permanent sailboat in the Harbor. The 158-foot, gaff-rigged, topsail schooner holds up to 150 passengers. Clipper City offers both private charters and public charters that last for two hours Mon-Sat, noon to 3pm, at $12 per person ($2 for kids). On Sundays, there’s a sailing brunch for $30 per person. Of course, private charters can last longer are priced higher. The public charters sail the Harbor and surrounding areas.
